Artistically retranscribing biological theories
“Our biology has its own colors, its own shadows and lights, its own scents, and its own emotions. In essence, its own expressions.”
We humans represent and explain scientific findings related to living organisms under the lid of biological theories. These observations and data are simply what they are. They do not change. What changes is our interpretation of them, which despite advancing methodologies are not yet immune to major imperfections.
In spite of our deep and potent knowledge of biology we continuously question the inherently subjective interpretations of raw data by scientists. Which despite their subjectivity are often regarded as fixed and superior truths. Perhaps, by embracing a multiplicity of representations, we could better balance accuracy with complexity, accessibility, creativity, and inclusivity?
Artistic media, free from a singular, scientific, and imposed methodology offer a powerful avenue to explore and express the spaces inbetween biology and art. Spaces of imagination and sensory intelligence that are often neglected. It was for this reason that A.R.BT. Artistically Retranscribing Biological Theories was founded.
A.R.BT. aims to broaden our understanding of biological theories by retranscribing them artistically. Traversing the lesser seen emotions, imaginary realities and concepts inherent in biology. A.R.BT. fosters a new culture where artistic and scientific realms become one to open up dialogue and discovery while addressing philosophical viewpoints.
The A.R.BT. initiative unfolds through a variety of artistic media, including performative, auditory and literary explorations, as well as laboratory techniques, all of which contribute to enhancing the dialogue. Currently, artistic retranscription of how our pancreas contributes to the processing or digestion of ingested food is being explored through musical composition of the organ’s inner and outer sounds. This work in its entirety is building towards an A.R.BT. stage performance artistically retranscribing the sensitivities, the hidden sides and precepts of biological theories.
